Google, Science, Technology, WebQuake Fans – Get ready for a new experience
Quake II

Quake II

We already know of several popular desktop computer application being ported to the web… Web Office, Web Desktop, Web Messanging, even Web OS.
What about Web Quake? The classic Quake II, the first-person shooter computer game with millions of fans gets ready for the web…

After the Jake2 Java 3D game engine port of the GPL’d Quake2 game engine, Three Googlers present their 20% project: a port of the Quake II engine to HTML5 using the Google Web Toolkit.

Jake2 used Java jogl for OpenGL graphics and joal for 3D sound (since version 0.9.4 an a lwjgl driver is included as alternative for the jogl/joal combination) and required either the data files from the original game or from the demo version, ultimately making it available for Linux, Windows2000/XP and Mac OS X.

The new Quake II GWT Port takes this further by porting Jake2, the Java version of Quake II, running in a Webkit browser. It would now be entirely running with JavaScript, CSS and HTML5, including HTML5 audio tags.

Do check it out but If you don’t want to build and run Quake2 GWT port, you can still have some fun with Quake on QuakeLive.com
